Portal configuration

Pages in this article

A captive portal in WiLake is the configuration for the landing page that is shown to the users when they try to access the Internet. It is used to authenticate them and to show them the terms and conditions applicable to the usage of the network.

Name

The name of the captive portal is an internal identifier that is used to refer to it in the user interface. This name is not shown to the users.

Design

The design is the aspect of the pages displayed to the users when they try to access the Internet. The following templates are available:

Modern

The modern template is a modern-looking template that is suitable for most use cases. It is made from scratch, and it is not based on any external stylesheet. This is the recommended template.

Authentication mechanisms

WiLake supports several captive portal authentication mechanisms. Depending on the use case, one or another authentication mechanism will be more suitable. Sometimes, for compliance reasons, you may need to use a specific mechanism.

Social login

The users can authenticate using external accounts:

To allow them to access to their social accounts, the users will be allowed internet access to the authentication servers, but not to the rest of the Internet. This is why certain pre-authorisation rules are added to the site.

Email

The users can authenticate using their email address. An email will be sent to the user with a six-digit code that the user will need to provide in the captive portal.

To allow them to access their email addresses, the users will be allowed internet access for a few minutes after they enter their email address.

SMS

The users can authenticate using their phone number. An SMS will be sent to the user with a six-digit code that the user will need to provide in the captive portal.

Take into account SMS requires users to enter a phone number, which may discourage them from using the network. Also, SMS may be unavailable in places with poor mobile coverage.

Customisations

The logo is the image that is shown in the top of each page, and should identify the business or organisation that provides the wifi network. It should be 420x120 pixels in size or a multiple of that size.

The background image is the image that is shown in the background of each page. It should be 1920x1080 pixels in size, and will be darkened to make the text more readable.

The accent colour is used in buttons, links and other elements to highlight them. It should be the colour used by the business or organisation that provides the wifi network.

The legal documents are the terms and conditions that the users must accept to use the wifi network. They are shown in the captive portal before connecting to the network.

Refer to the legal documents section for more information.
